My very first game. A cozy 2D platformer in a world woven out of cloth, where every place has a right side and a wrong side, and a small moth-folk kite-mender can thread herself through to the other side and keep running.

The idea

Hold any cloth up to the light

You'll see its other side: the same shapes, but full of knots, seams and loose ends. Tetherwick is a country of sky-isles, and every isle is woven cloth. When a storm called the Tangle snapped the kite-lines that hold them, it tugged the weave of the world through itself, so every isle came out a little wrong side out.

Patchwork Downs, the right side: green hills, a windmill, a kite and a brass eyelet in the grass. The same meadow from the wrong side: dark woven cloth, seams, a loose knot and glowing threads.

Patchwork Downs, the first course: two sides of one meadow. Move the lantern (or a finger) over it.

Thread through

Wherever the cloth has a brass eyelet, Bobbin can thread herself through it and pop out on the other side of the same place, still moving.

Tie strands

A strand she ties between two brass pins is a real thread on both sides at once: a floor on one side, a bridge on the other.

Untie the knots

The Tangle tied its knots on the back, where nobody looks. Untie one on the wrong side, and on the right side the fold smooths flat.

It's kind and fair: no lives, gentle falls, a reset cord for every puzzle, and foes you untie instead of beat.

Bobbin: a round, fuzzy moth-folk with feathery antennae, amber goggles, a striped scarf and a brass reel on her back.
The hero

Meet Bobbin

A young moth-folk kite-mender. A fixer who can't walk past a loose end: cheerful, stubborn, and a bit too sure of herself.

  • Two long feathery antennae that bounce with every step.
  • Amber goggles pushed up, and a teal-and-saffron striped scarf.
  • Four tiny wings that buzz in her big jumps.
  • A brass reel on her back. Its needle flashes when an eyelet or a pin is in reach, and its spool is her health: six coils.
  • Over fifty moves: jumps, flips, wall kicks, dives and ground pounds.
  • She hums a four-note tune while she works, and whispers on the wrong side.
The look and the sound

A living tapestry, very old

The world looks like an ancient woven and embroidered hanging that has come alive. The right side is wool and linen in old plant dyes: madder red, weld gold, woad blue, walnut brown and lichen green. Gold thread glows softly on the things that hold old magic: the great tree, the eyelets and the Bright Knots.

The wrong side is the same tapestry held up against candlelight, a warm dark where the threads run, knot and hang loose.

The music sounds like old weavers playing at a great loom in a stone hall: drones, a lyre, a bone flute, a wheel-fiddle, bronze bowls, a hummed choir, and the loom itself as the drum.

The Mooring, Bobbin's home isle at dawn: the great tree and the quay above a sea of cloud.

Where it stands

Still in the making

I'm making it one piece at a time and showing you every piece in the Lantern Logs. There's no release date yet.

Built so far

  • Patchwork Downs, the first course: both sides of the meadow, its seven Bright Knots, its foes and its music.
  • Bobbin's full move set, her reel, and threading through.
  • Her home isle, the Mooring: the Quay, the great tree and the Mending Room, being finished now.
  • The title, three save files and the opening story.

Coming

  • Six more woven courses: Stiltwater, Tinkletree Orchard, the Nightnap, Spindleforge, Rimewarp Peaks and the Ragged Hem.
  • Bosses to untie along the way, and the Tangle itself.
  • More folk who come home to the Mooring as you help them.
